You’ve landed here because you want to know how to become a famous singer. The following will outline what I’ve personally experienced in my 15+ years as a professional recording engineer and producer. Here are 5 steps to get you started.
It’s a tough business, no doubt. You will need determination as well as a very thick skin. Rejection is high and success is low. The best thing you can do is to take that “no” and interpret it into constructive criticism. Why did they say no? Keep in mind, a “no” only means “not right now”.
How many times could you ask for a record deal? Every time you perform, you are asking for the approval of your fans. We can’t quit through this process. Did you know that Russell Simmons passed on Nas? You need that persistence to get you through the rough patches.
It’s not the 1930’s anymore where artist were discovered working at a diner. In this day and age EVERYONE is accessible. The entry barrier has been set very low, especially in the music business. You’re going to need to stand out from the rest of the noise. The music you are putting out needs to be of the highest quality. The graphics associated with your product must be able to compete with what’s being sold. The music needs to be mixed and mastered. If your track is played right after an artist that is established, it needs to be as competitive, or better, as that track.
To achieve a high quality product, you’re going to need to have some type of budget in place. Getting to the top is a marathon, not a sprint. Take your time. Budget in enough capital and time so that your artistic vision is carried all the way through. Things to consider in your budget:
- Recording Studio Time
- Mixing and Mastering
- Marketing and Promotions
Attend any and all networking events. There are many conferences to meet and greet the decision makers. Some notable events are SXSW which is held in Austin, Texas. Winter Music Conference held in Miami, FL. ASCAP Expo held in Los Angeles, CA. MUSE Expo held in Hollywood, CA.
I hope that you reach your goal of becoming a famous singer. It’s a great career. I’ve seen many of my clients get there but you must be ready to go into battle. Best of luck. See you at the top!
